In this issue:

Welcome to the first issue of
a fresh breeze...

Beware the sissy semicolon.

Good writing skills... do they seem to have gone the way of good manners?

Up until a few months ago, someone on our staff, who will remain nameless, was addicted to those sissy semicolons. Many of us who write for our jobs … just the regular old business communication stuff – emails, letters, invoices, web postings – use semicolons way too much. Excellent copy writers are even known to use them rather than write full sentences. We are trying to break the sissy semicolon habit at Force 5, no matter how painful.

A recent column by James Kilpatrick entitled "The Writer’s Art" took on the semicolon. Kilpatrick’s articles are distributed by Universal Press Syndicate and are definitely worth the read, especially the one on sissy semicolons. You can see all his columns at the uexpress website. Kilpatrick is a great source to refresh ourselves on just what exactly is excellent writing.

This is not a brand... read Neumeier's book to find out why.

A worthwhile, breezy read...

Over the last several months, we have devoured some great marketing and business books…some were worth the time, others, well, not so wonderful.

Probably the best short read was The Brand Gap by Marty Neumeier. It’s billed as a white board overview of how to bridge the distance between business strategy and design with great imagery and thought-provoking ideas throughout. Go get it. Talk about fresh and totally relevant.

After you read it, tell us what you think. Email us at goodread@forcefivemedia.com and we will post a summary in our next issue of a fresh breeze!

There's more to life than work

For those of you who have not met Archie, our office dog, you might be interested to know that Archie also has a life outside the office. He goes to the hospital every Wednesday night with his owner, David Morgan, as part of Northern Indiana's chapter of the Delta Society's Pet Partners. They visit numerous hospital patients, some who are completely unresponsive to human interaction - until Archie walks in the room. David says some patients may end up "talking about everything except why they're in the hospital." Over the past 5 years, they've now visited nearly 1800 patients!

To learn more, read the June 24th article on Archie that appeared recently in The Elkhart Truth, "A dog and his man start a new practice."
